Blue cloth with elaborate gilt marine scene with fishes, seaweed, snails and bivalves. Similar design in blind to rear board. Gilt titles and decorations to spine. Binding remarkable well-preserved, with only light shelfwear to head and tail of spine and corners. A.e.g. Internally clean with only light foxing to first few and last few leaves. Illustrated with 12 colour plates and three wood engravings. fine A beautiful example of a publisher's pictorial binding with vibrant gilt decoration of marine plant and animal life. Remarkably bright and well-preserved. The book provides a conversational introduction to the "wonders of the shore," and illustrates these wonders with 12 fine colour plates. 1886
