VERY GOOD. xi, [1], 270, [2] pp. 4 B/W plates with illustrations by James McBrides, frontispiece tissue intact. 12mo, rustic khaki cloth, title stamped in black and ruled in red, deckled fore and tail edges. Typical foxing and two small stains to front cover, two owner's inscriptions to FFEP, front hinge just starting at head, otherwise a very sound and handsome copy. This first collection of James's stories was a surprise hit from the Cambridge paleographer and medievalist. Bleiler notes, "Ghost-Stories of an Antiquary is generally taken to mark the beginning of the modern era of supernatural fiction. Most of his stories are concerned with the 'evil that dieth not but lieth in wait,' with a fine use of the exotica of antiquarianism. In the opinion of many the foremost modern writer of supernatural fiction" (p. 279." Bleiler 911.
Synopsis
Ghost Stories of an Antiquary is the title of M. R. James' first collection of ghost stories, published in 1904 (some had previously appeared in magazines). Some later editions under this title contain both the original collection and its successor, More Ghost Stories (1911), combined in one volume. Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936) was a medieval scholar; Provost of King's College, Cambridge.
