About This Item

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1959. Hardcover. Good/Good. Hardcover. Octavo. 378pp. Spine lightly cocked. Spotting to top fore edge.

The author's interest in legal cases involving circumstantial evidence was kindled when one of her family's friends was narrowly convicted of murdering his wife. After this experience Lewis wrote The Wife of Martin Guerre (1941), The Trial of Soren Qvist (1947), and The Ghost of Monsieur Scarron (1959), all of which involve plots revolving around the misinterpretation of circumstantial evidence.
