About This Item
Philadelphia: P. Blakiston's Son & Co., 1914. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. xxviii, 517 pages, indexed. Hardcover bound in original grey cloth. Light to moderate rubbing and wear to the binding. The spine is a little sunned and has one dark spot. Secure inner hinges. The text is a little toned but generally clean. Illustrated with several black and white plates. Ignatz Leo Nascher (1863-1944) is widely know as the father of the study of Geriatrics in America. He originated the term "Geriatrics" in 1909 in an article. He argued that old age should be considered a separate field of study, and this book was the first American book on the subject. He had difficulty finding a publisher for the book, and indeed few copies turn up on the market. Although the field of Geriatrics has changed in the past 110 years, this book set the foundation for the medical and social study of aging in America. He founded the New York Geriatrics Society in 1905. A nice copy of a rare book.
