First Edition (1980), not directly stated, but First Printing indicated by a complete numerical sequence, according to Houghton Mifflin's customary practice at the time of publication. Very Good+ in Good+ DJ: The Book shows indications of very careful use: just a touch of shelving wear to the lower extremities; the binding leans slightly off square, but remains secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and minor, unobtrusive flaws. The DJ shows extremely heavy sunning to the backstrip; a tiny snag at the top of the front hinge; just a hint of wear to the corner tips; the very mildest rubbing and faint soiling; price unclipped; mylar-protected. Seriously flawed, but the overall condition is excellent and it remains intact. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Oblong 8vo. (8.35 x 8.7 x 0.5 inches). 47 pages. Language: English. Weight: 12.3 ounces. Hardback with DJ. The classic continuation of the idyllic friendship of those shy, pin-eyed, buck-toothed hippos. In five brief episodes two hippopotamuses reinforce their friendship: "The Dance Recital," "The French Lesson," "The Disguise," "The Beach," "The Garden." James Marshall (19421992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious childrens books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a masters degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his lifes work as one of the finest creators of childrens books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children.
Synopsis
Two lovable hippos teach the meaning of friendship in five separate vignettes: "Split Pea Soup," "The Flying Machine," "The Tub," "The Mirror," "The Tooth."
