George Cruikshank collection

by CRUIKSHANK, George (1792-1878)

  • Used
1872. No binding & hard cover. George Cruikshank was a celebrated British caricaturist, book illustrator, and friend of Charles Dickens.

The collection consists of 5 items dating from 1831 to 1872, specifically a manuscript, 3 books formerly owned by Cruikshank and a carte-de-visite,

1 Manuscript:

• Ms., 1 page (repaired), July 1872, re giving a collection of his works to the British nation. In a four-flap cloth folder with printed label in leather.

3 Books owned by Cruikshank:

• David Brewster, The Life of Isaac Newton (London: John Murray, 1831), Family Library, no. XXIV, dull cream grey cloth, text block re-attached, in a custom wrap and slipcase, signed by Cruikshank on the title page.

• James Beattie, The Minstrel; Or, the Progress of Genius and Other Poems (London: John Sharp, 1833), embellished with engravings from the designs of Richard Westall, original red paper boards, partial paper label on the spine, upper board repaired and re-attached, bookplates of John Louis Ketterlinus (son of Philadelphia lithographer Eugene Ketterlinus, proprietor of Ketterlinus Printing house, later Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Company) and Calvin Bullock (banker), Cruikshank's signature on the title page.

• Mary Cowden Clarke, Kit Bam's Adventures; Or, the Yarns of an Old Mariner (London: Grant and Griffith, 1849), illustrations by Cruikshank. Bound by Worsfold in full leather, re-backed with a gilt stamped tan leather spine, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Part of the original cloth cover and backstrip are bound in at the rear. The boards show some scuffing, edge-wear and rubbing to the corners and spine ends. The leather is crackled at the edges. The upper hinge is cracked, with the frontispiece loosening a bit, but with the binding solid. Signed by the author at the top of the title page: "To the children of H.D. Jones Esquire | An imperfect token of the grateful esteem | felt towards him by | The Author". Cruikshank's signature on a piece of paper affixed to the front free endpaper.

1 CDV:

• Carte-de-visite, Black, Boston, n.d.
