Illustrated with plates from photos (including frontspiece) and drawings, map of the Harriman Alaska Expedition 1899. Facsimile of original 1904 title page at III. Original green cloth with gilt decoration on front cover and gilt lettered leather label on spine. Top edge gilt. Green canvas dust jacket with gilt lettered leather label on spine. Minor shelf wear to bottom edges of covers. Clean and tight copy. fine B.K. Emerson recieved his Ph.D from the Universtiy of Gottingen, Germany in 1868. The most sophisticated geology programs at that time were in Germany. Emerson later taught at Emerson College in Amherst, MA where he made a geologic map of Old Hamshire County in 1898, revised the State geologic map in 1917 and also taught Darwinian evolution. Emerson's title in 1870 was Professor of Geology and Zoology. 1910
