About This Item
London: A. Dodd & F. Jeffries; et al., Printers. Good+. 1731. First Edition; Mixed. Leather. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 546 pages; 1731 A. Dodd & F. Jeffries; et al. , printers & Edward Cave, London. The first 12 monthly issues of Cave's pioneering Gentleman's Magazine bound together in one volume. The monthly Magazines are of varying "editions' from 1st through 4th; their popularity and the demand for earlier issues kept Cave busy reprinting older month issues even as he was editing and printing the next regular issue. Soundly bound in contemporary paneled calf with leather title label at spine. Prior ownership of Charles Pyott and his wife, daughter of Sir Richard Sandys. The Pyott and Sandys armorial bookplates overlay each other on the front pastedown; their marriage is announced on page 36 of the 1st issue of the Magazine. Contents are complete and clean from page [1] - 132. Thereafter occur a few numbers of pages and title pages (i.e. covers) lacking. As the layout of the title pages and the order of the sections was not entirely consistent between issues, some of these apparent deficiencies may be advertisements not bound in, the lack of the cover/title page, which is counted in pagination, or the books section pages at rear of most issues not being bound in. Lacking pp 133-142; title page for April is present but without the woodcut head piece of St John's Gate; still it but appears to be the 1st issue. Lacking pp 185-188 , 187-88 being the title page for May. Lacking title page for June (i.e. pp 233/34), pp 275/276 (i.e. title page for July), pp 315-318, apparently the title page for August with an unexplained extra page. Lacking a leaf paged 409-10 but perhaps a leaf of ads, as cover for October is present; similarly lacking pages numbered 456-458. Covers/Title pages for October, November and December are present. The editions of the magazines by number are as follows: No. 1, 2nd edition; No.2, 4th edition. No. 3, 1st edition; No. 4, 1st edition; issues No. 5 - 9, indeterminate, lacking title pages; No. 10 -12, all are 3rd edition. [4] pages between June and July issues are a contents table for the 1st 6 issues.[8] pages at rear are an Index to the whole volume. Aside from deficiencies specified the condition is quite very good but is sold as is nonetheless .
