About This Item

Athens : The Gennadius Library, 1981]. Soft cover, 38 pp. A Survey of the Collections by Francis R. Walton, with the assistance of T.E. Gregory and Sophie Papageorgiou In very good condition. Glossy pictorial paper covers have light bumping to edges and corners and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Pages lightly aged but otherwise clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. Nice color illustrations and photos throughout. [From Preface] The publication of this book was made possible by the firm "Hellenic Shipyards" and by the Friends of the Gennadius Library. Mrs. L. Braggiotti supervised the layout of the text and pictures, and Eugene Vanderpool Jr. did the photography. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is pleased to present, in the one-hundredth year of its founding, this short description of the collections in the Gennadius Library. Since the time of the magnificent gift by Joannes Gennadius of his private collection over half a century ago, the library has grown steadily in its holdings of rare books, research materials, archives and works of art, so that it is now one of the major libraries in the world. We are especially proud to make available to scholars from all countries, and particularly to the intellectual community in Greece, a library whose basic concept from its inception has been to contain not only specialized collections of materials related to antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Modern Greece, but to comprise in its holdings all things Hellenic. We hope that the present volume will help scholars and the general public to obtain a better understanding of Gennadius' vision.
