First Edition; Demy 8vo; pp. more than 9500; plus engraved maps (some folding) and plates, marbled endpapers, marbled edges, uniformly bound in contemporary diced calf, gilt stamped decoration to spines, some splitting on spines, titles lettered in gilt on spines, occasional browning, calf a little rubbed, the spines mellowed, bookplate on front endpapers, good set. Truly comprehensive account of sea and land voyages, from the time of Alfred the Great in the ninth century to the great voyages of Captain Cook at the end of the eighteenth century. The eighteen volumes cover Europe, Africa, Asia, America, Polynesia and Australia. The voyages to the Pacific, from Magellan to Cook, are covered in volumes ten to seventeen. The final volume includes a "Historical Sketch of the Progress of Discovery, Navigation, and Commerce.." by William Stevenson along with a bibliography of nearly a thousand titles. Ferguson 971.
