A perfectly serviceable reference copy, a set complete in two volumes; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, of the Everyman's Library edition, #527, of the classic epic romance by Francois Rabelais. Short, squat hardcover format, bound in blue cloth over boards, sharp and distinct copper lettering to each spine. Decorated endpapers front and rear. "Francois Rabelais, born in Touraine about 1494. Before 1530, when he graduated in medicine, he hd been in both Franciscan and Benedictine monasteries. Appointed physician at the Hotel-Dieu at Lyons. In 1534 went to Italy under patrongage of Cardinal Jean du Bellay, and passed his life partly there and partly in Paris until 1550, when he was made Cure of Meudon.
