About This Item
MacMillan Company, New York, 1906. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Inscribed in a handsome cursive on the title page: "For M. E. Hansell, Mabel Osgood Wright, Fairfield, Conn." Writing under a pseudonym in this treatise on gardening, Wright was a pioneering author on the environment and an early leader in the Audubon movement, serving a director from 1905 to 1928. She is perhaps best known for "Birdcraft," an early bird guide (1895). Gray cloth with gilt lettering and a red vine patterning (for this book about gardens). Very good plus with bumping to corners and some foxing to page edges, but the interior clean and tight; fading to red vines on the spine. All and all a very attractive find. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in nature writing and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
