Leather labels in second and third compartments with gilt-tooled title and volume number; gilt-tooled decoration in remaining compartments. Triple gilt-ruled borders on boards. All page edges gilt. Gilt-tooled turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. Blue ribbon bookmarks. Floral title vignette or printer's emblem. Woodcut head-pieces. Engraved bookplate on front fixed endpaper with motto "Mihi Aperies Iter" and handwritten note: "The Property of W.W. Watson." In Fair+ Condition: leather is cracked along both spines with some loss at spine ends; vol. 2 lacking spine labels; joints are cracked; both text blocks are solid.

London: Robert Hardwicke, 1874. A lovely copy of this first edition. green cloth with gilt titles and border to the front board. Frontis engraving of an Orchid House (complete with waterfall). Four beautifully hand coloured plates and black and white engraved vignettes and illustrations throughout. The cloth is in very nice clean condition, with just a little bumping to the top of the spine. Internally clean, but very slightly darkened. iv. 160 pages. 180 by 120mm (7 by 4¾ inches).

It's not ofter that you find two original volumes published / printed in 1726. Overall, these titles are in V Good condition and 100% legible ( albeit with Olde English spelling ) The titles are leather bound (spines and corners) with printed board covers.
A previous owner has pasted additional pages at the start of Volume 1 and pasted various newspaper clippings and hand written texts relevant to the themes of Mr Toland dated through the 1800's further enhancing the value of the set.
John Toland (30 November 1670 – 11 March 1722) was an Irish rationalist philosopher and freethinker, and occasional satirist, who wrote numerous books and pamphlets on political philosophy and philosophy of religion. Full red grained leather binding with gilt raised banding, title and decoration on the spine. Gilt floral edge decoration on both boards. All edges gilt. A fine well bound edition – aesthetically pleasing.
The Pilgrim's Progress from This World, to That Which Is to Come is a 1678 Christian allegory written by John Bunyan. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious, theological fiction in English literature. It has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. It appeared in Dutch in 1681, in German in 1703 and in Swedish in 1727. The first North American edition was issued in 1681. It has also been cited as the first novel written in English.
