About This Item

London; Published for the Proprietor by Rudolph Ackermann, 1837., 1837. Hard Cover. First edition. Octavo, pp. 208. With 15 aquatints of shooting scenes by J. T. Rawlins, each with tissue guard, as called for. With the errata slip tipped-in at end. Original full green morocco with Black Letter titles in gilt to spine, gilt fillet and elaborate foliate border to both boards; all edges gilt. Spine lightly sunned and edges rubbed with slight wear to corners; a slightly shaken copy with weak inner front hinge but holding well. Bookplates of A. Norman Dugdale and Adam Thomas Dugdale to fore. Small tear to tissue guard of frontispiece; minor browning to textual leaves opposite plates. A very good copy. The very first work dedicated to pheasant rearing and the forestry and woodland management necessary for the protection of game for sport. Enhanced by the set of vibrant aquatints depicting gentlemen shooting in all weathers and giving an insight into the sporting practices of the time. Scarce. Tooley: English Books with Coloured Plates, 393; Abbey: Life in England in Aquatint and Lithography, 392.
