John Russell Smith, 1855, Large 8vo, approximately 1.5 x 8.6 inches (29 x 21 cm), 24 half page woodcuts in the text, title page in red and black 167 unnumbered pages of the original Caxton edition, followed by 8 pages of Remarks and a 5-page list of Caxton's works, 1 page of Synopsis of Characters and Combinations used in "The Game of Chesse". The Type has been carefully imitated, and the cuts traced from the copy in the British Museum. The paper has also been made expressly as near as possible to the original paper.
Bound in half leather over marbled boards. Spine and covers rubbed, corners bumped, shelf wear to edges, One small hole at bottom of title page (that states that there was no title page in the original edition), otherwise a very good copy. Caxton's book was first printed in 1474, then reprinted in 1482 with woodcuts added. It is a translation of Jacobus de Cessolis' thirteenth century political treatise, the Liber de moribus hominum et officiis nobilium ac popularium super ludo scachorum (The Book of the Morals of Men and the Duties of Nobles and Commoners, on the Game of Chess)
