He was the first man to publicly recommend the Confederation of Canada; he served as Finance Minister in John A. Macdonald's first federal Cabinet; and as High Commissioner in London, he was Canada's first 'ambassador'. (His) son Elliott was responsible for widespread development in the Canadian West. A formidable businessman in his own right, he led in the establishment of Lethbridge, Alberta, and pioneered coal-mining and irrigation in the province." Light wrinkling at top of spine.
