He invested in railroads, canals, and in the G. & D. Cook Carriage Company. Although he opposed slavery, he carried on a lively trade with his southern customers. At the outbreak of war, rather than suffer from his lack of contact with the south, his company began manufacturing gun carriages for use by the Northern Armies.
