About This Item

Wien and Gottingen: Chr. Ralfuß und Urmbruster; Dietrichfchen Buchbandlung, 1835. Leather bound. Good. Leather bound. 6 3/4" X 4 1/8". Text in German. The only engravings contained in these volumes appear on the half-titles for every "Lieferung," there are no other plates or illustrations, though the title indicates smaller copies of Hogarth's engravings by Carl Rahl and E. Riepenhausen. Half-title with engraving lacking for eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth "Lieferung." Marbled paper over boards, with spines backed in brown calf and lettered and stamped in gilt. Rather heavy wear to bindings, with corners spit and turned in, heavy scattered rubbign, light soiling, and wear to exterior hinges. Bindings are sound. Pages are age-toned and foxed, else clean and unmarked. An overall quite well-preserved four-volume set in matching mid-Nineteeth Century bindings of fourteen commentaries on the influential prints of artist, social critic, pictorial satirist, and cartoonist William Hogarth (1697-1764) by the German satirist and anglophile Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799).

Volume I contains first through third "Lieferung": [vi], v-xxxvi, 136pp, viii, [ii], 11-207pp, [iv], iii-vi, 215pp.
Volume II contains fourth through sixth "Lieferung": [vi], 5-180pp, [iv], 3-144pp, [iv], iii-x, [ii], 13100pp.
Volume III contains seventh through eleventh "Lieferung": [vi], v-vi, [ii], 9-191pp; [viii], 7-168pp, [ii], 3-81pp.
Volume IV contains twelfth through fourtheenth "Lieferung": [ii], iii-iv, [ii], 3-76pp, [iv], v-xii, [ii], 117pp, [iii], v-xvi, [ii], 3-132pp.

About Underground Books, ABAA

Underground Books is an online rare and antiquarian bookshop as well as a brick and mortar general bookstore of the same name in downtown Carrollton, Georgia. Sister store Hills & Hamlets Bookshop is located in the nearby planned eco-community of Serenbe.

Co-owners Josh Niesse and Megan Bell met in 2011, just 10 days or so after Josh opened the doors of Underground Books, literally underground, several steps below street level in a 100-year-old basement in our historic downtown. Megan, an English student at the University of West Georgia, walked in, fell down the rabbit hole, and never left! Reader, we married in May of 2014, under the book arch that now resides at the bookshop. We are both proud alumni of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS), and Megan additionally of Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and of the ABAA Women's Initiative Mentorship Program.

We have two open bookshops that carry new, used, bargain, rare, and antiquarian books, as well as our online office, impossible without our incredible team of booksellers, including two fellow CABS graduates, Miranda McMillan and Suzanne Carnes.

Like many booksellers with open brick-and-mortar stores, we are passionate generalists, but our specialties are in decorative publisher's cloth bindings; fairy tales, folklore, and mythology; popular science and natural history; the occult; and fine press books.
