About This Item

Stuttgart: Friedrich Frommanns Verlag (E. Hauff), 1889. Illustrated by Pasted on frontis (Johanna Charlotte Frommann) with handwriting on bottom and title page, with signature of Wesselhoeft Mai 1897 on title. There are additional 8 plates (7 are tipped-in, but definitely bound), one text illustration p. 47. The 'undoctored' plate is a lithograph "Das Zenker'sche Jnsistut zu Jena" facing p.102. Of the 'doctored' plastes are 2-facing p. 48 (p.119 of another book); 1-facing p.112, 128, 144, 160, 176. Two are old photographs with additional handwriting (pictured). Stated 3rd edition. Black cloth, gilt spine title "Das Frommannische Haus". 8vo. pp. xxxii, 191, [1] colophon. Good+. Toned pages, some with tiny edge chips and tears. Prefaces dated 1870, 1872, 1888. Foxed clipping from Boston Traveler 8/11/1944 on the transport of Second Lt. Robert Wesselhoeft, Jr. of Westwood being flown from Calcutta Hospital to MGH for paralysis treatment he learned of from his uncle Dr. Conrad Wesselhoeft, chief surgeon at Haynes Memorial Hospital; period postcard Eisenach Burschenschaftsdenkmal laid in (rear). Unusual hand edited copy assumed to belong to a Wesselhoeft. A Wesselhoeft spoke at the grave of Johanna on 9/11/1830 and Dr. William W. opened the publishing house in Jena with his brother-in-law Friedrich Frommann. Frommann's father was a prominent German bookseller and contemporary of Goethe, Saxe Weimar, etc. The Wessellhoeft generations established homeopathy and hydrotherapy (water cure) in Germany and Baltimore, and other US cities. The lad in the clipping is also the nephew of Leverett Saltonstall (see Sue Young Histories, Homeopaths)..
