Hyde, William, ill.. (FINE BINDING-STUART, BERTHA) LUCAS, E.V. THE FRIENDLY TOWN; A LITTLE BOOK URBANE. New York: Henry Holt and Co., 1907. 8vo. Green cloth with gilt, all edges gi 380 pages. First edition, thus. Fine example of a book design by Bertha Stuart, noted Oregon artist who train at the Art Institute of Chicago and later studied at Cooper Union and the Art Students League. Between 1902 and 1912 she created more than 175 book cover designs, numerous page decorations, and illustrations for major New York City publishers. In 1912 she returned to Oregon, where she was a trustee of the Society of Arts and Crafts of Portland. With endpapers designed by William Hyde, and English artist who is best remembered as a book illustrator between the first great boom in book and magazine publishing and the appearance of th modern professional photographer. Fine.
