About This Item

G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1954. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good +/Good +. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First American Edition. 245 pp. Clean book, blue cloth with silver titling, some edgewear in a few spots. Dust jacket intact with some edgewear and minor chipping, some tape-repaired closed tears. Jacket now under archival mylar protector. A native of Holland, Oreste Pinto began his counterintelligence career in World War I. When World War II broke out, he was immediately called upon to help screen all aliens coming into England. In September, 1942, at the request of the Dutch Government-in-Exile in London, he was transferred to the Netherlands army to reorganize its Counter-Intelligence Mission attached to SHAEF, thus coming directly under General Eisenhower. During the Normandy campaign, with a staff of seven Dutch officers and men, it was his duty to see to the security of the armies moving up through France and Belgium in to Holland. During this period he also worked with the OSS and with the U.S. Navy. As a direct result of Colonel Pinto's counterintelligence work in World War II, seven spies were executed, and many others went to prison.
