Ventouillac (1796-1834) was born in Calais and emigrated to England in 1816 where he became a professor of French literature at King's College in London and published books on French literature. The present Dibdinesque work lists 1250 titles all of whom are carefully classified and have concise but useful notes (best editions, bibliographical descriptions etc.) by the author or other critics. The introduction gives a survey of French literature from the 'Roman de la Rose' to Victor Hugo. The book was highly praised in the London Literary Gazette: "We cannot do better than recommend this valuable work."
