About This Item
New York: M. Walter Dunne, 1901. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Quarto, hardcover, VG in brown boards; white paste-on on spine is faded. No markings or handwriting in book. Color frontis in duotone of man playing mandolin to lady in parlor. selections from Paul Scarron, Prosper Merimee, Count Volney, Gustave Flaubert, and Alphonse de Lamartine. The French are said to write in jest what they feel in earnest. They are masters of mirth and lightness, and especially of the short story. They excel in opalescent grace, in charm of narrative; and, if authorship has for its purpose the delight of the reader through the spell of sorcery, by the magic mating of words to ideas, then there is no literature in the world which can make that of the French tongue seem secondary. 413pp.
