New York: The Heron Press, (1944),1952. Small 8vo. (8¼ x 5¾). viii, [1]-263. Later edition. Hardcover in publisher's light brown cloth. Very good in a fair to good-only price-clipped dustwrapper, its flaps separating along the fold lines.
Inscribed and signed on the book's front endpaper. "To Wally and Celine Carson. Howard Fast."
First published in 1944, this new edition was issued as part of a uniform set of the collected works of American novelist Howard Fast. With a Foreword by W.E.B. Du Bois written for this new edition. Freedom Road was dramatized on television in 1979 starring Muhammad Ali in the lead, playing a formerly-enslaved man elected to the U.S. Senate during Reconstruction. "[A] sympathetic account of freed slaves during the period of Reconstruction that followed the Civil War." (ANB)
