About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn and no price- clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price - usually indicative of an export copy, which usually precedes the domestic first trade edns issue and distribution.Bright, crisp, clean, matt, navy blue background with white vignette to front panel illustrated dw/dj,with pale blue and white lettering; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present. Some minimal creasing with reciprocal bumping to head (with also a tiny, tiny snick) and foot of spine/backstrip.Book has a slight lean.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean, sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain navy blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain navy blue endpapers. Some production wrinkles to front pastedown and an impression from dw/dj's front inner flap to front free endpaper through to the half-title and the barest evidence of same to the title page.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-344pp [paginated] includes 23 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages and a dedication.Described hard but fairly and honestly - not as bad as it reads or would sound - just a detailed description! Author's debut novel.
Paul Murray is a junior bond trader. He runs to keep fit,he hates the office coffee machine and he's forgotten what its like to have a girlfried. He loves his job though and he's keen to make a good impression - but how keen does he have to be? When the vivacious Debbie Chater,a colleague of Paul's,is found dead, floating in the Thames, his life is turned upside-down.Paul's search for an explanation becomes a crusade as he uncovers a web of deception, fraud and murder.Everywhere he looks he finds more questions: What is "Uncle Sam's Money Machine"? What is the connection between Irwin Piper,an American entrepreneur with much to hide, and an aristocratic English lawyer? Where does Cash Callaghan, the honesty-free bond salesman fit in? And why is Cash's assistant,Cathy Lasenby, once so stand-offish,now so keen to help? The trouble is,Paul has no idea who is out to get him,let alone what it is they want to hide, and in a business where there's most definitely a killing to be made,he has every reason to feel paranoid. When the world's top publishers fight to get hold of a new author's first novel, you know it must be something special. And 'Free to Trade' certainly is outstanding - an exemplary thriller,an exceedingly good story, it is a superb debut for Michael Ridpath and the publishing event of the decade (then 1995). Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
