Among the few major artists who were born in Weimar, Franz Theobald Horny counts. The died young romantic who among connoisseurs as one of the most interesting artist of the 19th German Century is first honored with a retrospective. Large parts of his artistic legacy is in the Collection of Prints Künstammlungen to Weimar. This was also the fundamental monograph by Walther Scheidig. The Weimar stocks form the basis of the exhibition, enriched by selected exhibits from other cabinets. The exhibition will be shown first because of the historical background in Weimar, then in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Due to the fragility of watercolors and drawings, the exhibition period has been limited overall. The realization of the project goes back to joint initiatives of the two museums. The deliberately reduced, strict selection is the result of collaborative team work between Hanna Hohl, Hamburg, Hermann Mildenberger, Weimar, and Hinrich Sieveking, Munich. Despite the different perspectives that can be applied to Hornys oeuvre, it is nevertheless clear that the appreciation of his career is to locate in the Italian time. Therefore, the exhibition shows Franz Horny mainly as romantics in the light of Italy. Rolf Bothe, Director of Kunstsammlungen Weimar.
