The Swiss-born photographer George Francois Mugnier immigrated to New Orleans in 1868 and apprenticed under his father as a clock-maker before beginning a career in photography. He is best known for his views of New Orleans and the surrounding countryside in the 1880s. Offered here are four well preserved examples of his work, showing the New Orleans cotton industry in the 1880s, when roughly a third of American cotton production went through the city. A near fine collection with some occasional fading to images.
