First Dodd, Mead & Co. edition with a new introduction, featuring a full number line on copyright page. Solid text block, light rubbing to corners, a touch of shelf wear. Near fine copy. Housed in a custom slipcase, title in gilt on spine, decorative marbled paper-covered boards. Signed by the author on the title page. Roger Bannister (1929-2018) achieved worldwide fame on May 6, 1954, when he became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, breaking a barrier many considered impossible. His record-breaking mile, completed in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds at the Iffley Road track in Oxford, solidified his place in athletic history. Bannister went on to become a distinguished neurologist, leaving an indelible mark on both the worlds of medicine and athletics.
