London: The Tallis PRess, 1905 . First edition. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5". none. The first edition, later impression of this detective fiction novel with a cash prize for solving the mystery. First edition of The Four Just Men by Edgar Wallace in the original publisher's cloth binding. A later impression without the folding frontispiece. The binding advertises a £500 reward for solving the 'mystery'. The competition slip is missing, and the rear free endpaper is a perforated stub only as the slip was put to its proper use. Includes a presentation label from Howard and Mulholland, impresarios of the King's Theatre, London, dated October 8th 1906, the first night of the dramatisation of the novel. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. There are some light marks to the boards and the spine is slightly faded. Presentation label to the first pastedown. The hinges are slightly strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with some light spotting throughout. Good

Synopsis

When the Foreign Secretary Sir Philip Ramon receives a threatening, greenish-grey letter signed FOUR JUST MEN, he remains determined to see his Aliens Extradition Bill made law. A device in the members' smokeroom and a sudden magnesium flash that could easily have been nitro-glycerine leave Scotland Yard baffled. Even Fleet Street cannot identify the illusive Manfred, Gonsalez, Pioccart and Thery - FOUR JUST MEN dedicated to punishing by death those whom conventional justice can not touch.
