About This Item

London: The Tallis Press, 1905. First edition. Cloth. Good. 7" by 5" . None . A first edition, first impression of this popular detective novel by Edgar Wallace. The first edition, first impression of this work, with a folding frontispiece and evidence of the removal of the detachable competition slip to the rear free endpaper. A unique work which allowed readers to win a cash prize of £500 if they could solve the crime. However, due to the best-selling success of the book and the sheer amount of correct entries that were sent in, he failed to pay prize-winners. A later impression was published with the solution to the mystery bound in. A detective thriller featuring the four 'Just Men,' a group of wealthy vigilantes who punish wrong-doers created by Edgar Wallace, also protagonists in several sequels. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, back strip faded, faint damp marks and light marking to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting scattered to leaves. Good

Synopsis

When the Foreign Secretary Sir Philip Ramon receives a threatening, greenish-grey letter signed FOUR JUST MEN, he remains determined to see his Aliens Extradition Bill made law. A device in the members' smokeroom and a sudden magnesium flash that could easily have been nitro-glycerine leave Scotland Yard baffled. Even Fleet Street cannot identify the illusive Manfred, Gonsalez, Pioccart and Thery - FOUR JUST MEN dedicated to punishing by death those whom conventional justice can not touch.
