The author traces the development of ranching in South Texas, with particular emphasis on the heretofore unmentioned millions of sheep. His extensive research and wide personal experience are supported by excerpts from the previously unpublished letters of Walter Wilson Meek, a resident of the sheep frontier. William S Reese says ''An excellent study of the sheep industry in south Texas. The author discusses many things besides sheep. There is a long section on the cattle industry, which he sees as supplanting sheep.'' (Six-Score, Number 71). John H Jenkins states, ''Lehmann pierces a number of misconceptions about cattle and sheep in South Texas. His study includes extensive research into the Spanish period, the 19th century cattle and sheep boom, and present-day problems.
