Description: Includes one illustrated map by José Cisneros. Illustrated in black and white with several historic photographs, and includes additional maps. Book design by Carl Hertzog. This was issued in both a limited edition and a regular trade edition; this is the regular trade edition. The author traces the development of ranching in South Texas, with particular emphasis on the heretofore unmentioned millions of sheep. His extensive research and wide personal experience are supported by excerpts from the previously unpublished letters of Walter Wilson Meek, a resident of the sheep frontier. William S Reese says ''An excellent study of the sheep industry in south Texas. The author discusses many things besides sheep. There is a long section on the cattle industry, which he sees as supplanting sheep.'' (Six-Score, Number 71). John H Jenkins states, ''Lehmann pierces a number of misconceptions about cattle and sheep in South Texas. His study includes extensive research into the Spanish period, the 19th century cattle and sheep boom, and present-day problems. He states that wild cattle, sheep, and horses were never as numerous as has been heretofore assumed, not even after the Civil War. On the other hand, he shows that extensive herds of cattle and sheep were maintained during the Spanish period, and that more, and longer, cattle and sheep drives occurred during that period that during the heyday of the late 19th century.'' (Basic Texas Books, Number 125). Also listed 50 Great Western Illustrators, Cisneros, Number 110.
