Full green morocco with gilt-stamped vignette to both upper and lower boards, 5 raised bands with gilt decorated compartments, gilt title direct to spine, gilt dentelles, plain endpapers. All edges gilt. Beautiful FORE-EDGE PAINTING of a 19th-century Archery Range. Pp. [xxiv], 456, frontispiece engraving, additional engraved title-plate bearing the date 1840 of the first edition, plus 13 engraved plates, text followed by 24 plates of outline illustrations. Covers very slightly soiled, ink inscription with address of previous owner to front pastedown, mild spotting to prelims and margins of plates, otherwise a very good, crisp copy with a beautiful apropos fore-edge painting. Handsome on the shelf.
