"I put as many miles as possible between myself and the world of luxury hotels and stream-lined expresses," wrote Ella Maillart. Through a career that lasted eight decades, Maillart, a writer, photographer, and journalist, introduced her readers to far-off places. She brought main character energy to women's livesâher own and the women she met on her journeys. In this volume, Maillart's travels took her westward across China, through swamps, deserts and mountains, and her only regret was that the journey must someday end. "I was thinking; returning home I was different than the person who had left. I was no longer Swiss, or European. I belonged now to the whole world....." 1937
