New York: American News Company, 1866. First edition. Hardcover. Good. First edition. 12mo. hardcover in chocolate brown cloth with spine lettered in gilt. Title page printed in black and red. 274 pp. Cloth on the front board is rippled, small taer fera foot of spine and there is tidemarking on the first front blank; gift inscription on thge second blank, "To Elsie/ a present from Uncle John/ Augt 1866". William Pleater Davidge (1814-1888) was an English-born comedian (that is, comic actor, not a "stand up" as we might think of it today) who came to the United States in 1850 and became a noted American stage actor. In an early Broadway role, he appeared with famed actor Edwin Booth (to whom the book is dedicated). He played over a thousand parts in his career, including some of the comic Shakespeare characters. This nbook is an anecdotal autobiography, providing a first-hand look at tne mid-19th century stage. In fact the author line on the title page actually reads, "William Davidge, Comedian
