White, who wrote many travel books, was one of the first to call attention to the eastern Alps. He describes climbing through the mountains led by a local guide.

Inscription dated 1969 in red ink to verso of title-page. Walter White (1811-1893) trained as a cabinet maker in his father’s business, but for forty years served as a librarian at the Royal Society. He wrote a number of books based around his walking holidays, including erxpeditions to Mont Blanc, eastern Germany and Bohemia. Book
