Pelikan first divides his characters into two trios -- Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky and Nietzsche (known for their '' clarity of mind and singleness of heart that are the peculiar gift of the insane'') and Paul, Luther and Bach (all evidencing ''the madness of the Holy, an insanity that saw what sanity refused to admit''). By matching a character from each group he systematically explores their relationship to and embodiment of the True, the Good and the Beautiful. Pelikan's only demand is that the Holy remain unqualified and incarnate within the person of Christ -- the cornerstone and stumbling Block. Christ the True, the Good and the Beautiful himself, by whom the wisest can say, ''we are fools for his sake.''
