About This Item

Hartford: American Publishing Company , 1897. First edition (Subscription ed. - no priority) . Hardcover. Good. First Edition with signature mark "11" on page 161, single publisher listed and no mention of New York on title page; top edge gilt. Photogravure portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, and numerous full-page and in-text illustrations throughout, by Frank Berkeley Smith, Frederick Dielman, Peter Newell, et al. . This was the last of the subscription books Twain published and his last book to be published by the American Publishing Company. "The subscription book was sold originally by publisher's agents direct to the reader...and could be ordered in extra-bindings, that is the bindings aside from the usual cloth, were in sheep, half morocco, and full morocco. It was assumed that all states of the binding were simultaneous, none having first-edition priority over the other." [Johnson, Bibliography of the Works of Mark Twain, p.153] Leather binding with chipping and edgewear to spine with two square inch loss on top of spine, scratches on backcover, else a clean, unmarked copy of the leather bound subscription edition. Photos available on request.

Synopsis

Following the Equator (American English title) or More Tramps Abroad (English title) is a non-fiction travelogue published by American author Mark Twain in 1897. Twain was practically bankrupt in 1894 due to a failed investment into a "revolutionary" typesetting machine.
