His second book, this was the first of his two non-Navajo novels, like his first book it is also a novel of suspense, but in this case it's political suspense by someone who knew that arena as Hillerman was a long-time newspaper reporter who covered politics, his main character, John Cotton, a political reporter who is also an avid fly-fisherman is depicted in a large Signed original drawing by famed Navajo artist Ernest Franklin wherein Cotton is shown fly fishing, in addition Franklin offers four other original illustrations, one is a small line drawing of a wolf on the front free endpaper, followed by a full-page full color portrait of Hillerman, Franklin offers another line drawing of a windmill on the page that lists other Hillerman titles, the dedication page sports another line drawing, this of an oil pumping apparatus, Hieb bibliography A2a, with slipcase, only a handful of this title were illustrated by Franklin and even fewer offer multiple illustrations, Signed by Hillerman. Fine in a very good plus jacket.

Synopsis

Loaded with e-book extras (not available in the print edition), including Tony Hillerman's running commentary on his work, his series heroes Leaphorn and Chee, and a special profile of the Navajo nation.A dead reporter's secret notebook implicates a senatorial candidate and political figures in a million-dollar murder scam.Reporter John Cotton knows what to do when he finds a great story, but he is a little afraid when a big story begins to find him. It starts when a fellow reporter is murdered and his notebook, filled with information about a tax scam, ends up in John's hands. Not long afterwards, a body is discovered in John's car. Then John's car ends up in the river, a bomb is found in his apartment, and his girlfriend drops out of sight. It's up to John to unravel the mystery of the notebook and why anyone would kill for the information it contains.
