About This Item

Orlando, FL: Historical Society of Central Florida, 2005. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. The Highwaymen. 11 1/8 X 8 5/8 Inches. 128 PP. "Renowned for their resourcefulness, speed and creativity, a group of Florida artists known as the Highwaymen employed a unique painting style as a way to assert their economic independence and agency during and after the segregation era." - Tess Christiansen of The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History & Culture

Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page. Signed and inscribed "To Peggy" by Beatty on the title-page. Additionally signed by the Highwaymen themselves, including: Robert Lewis (pg 40), Roy McLendon (pg 46), James Gibson (INSCRIBED, pg 48), Mary Ann Carroll (pg 52), Issac Knight (pg 63), Robert Lewis (SECOND AUTOGRAPH, pg 65), W.C. Reagan (pg 64), Issac Knight (SECOND AUTOGRAPH, pg 76), Al Black (pg 93), Mary Ann Carroll (SECOND AUTOGRAPH, pg 100), Mary Ann Carroll (THIRD AUTOGAPH, pg 104). Also includes three candid color photographs of Mary Ann Carroll at an outdoor signing event for the book.

The Highwaymen (and one woman of course) are a part of Florida heritage like no other artist or group of artists. The impact of their art reached far beyond the food it put on the table for their families so many years ago. The simple paintings depicting palm trees and mossy shores have defined Florida art for nearly a century. "Peggy" was obviously a fan and collector and we are so very thankful for her pursuit of these autographs, many of them dated at different times.
