· "The Cut-Glass Bowl" focuses on a scandalous affair between Evylyn Piper and Freddy Gedney. After their affair is exposed, Evylyn's life spirals out of control, ending in a tragic accident involving the titular cut-glass bowl.

· "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" portrays the struggle of a young mixed-race girl, Bernice, who tries to fit in with her sophisticated cousin Marjorie's crowd. Bernice's decision to bob her hair leads to unexpected and dramatic consequences.

· "Benediction" follows Lois, who undergoes an emotional transformation during her visit to her brother Keith, who is studying to become a priest, on her way to meet her lover, Howard.

· "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong" narrates the story of Bryan Dalyrimple, a young war veteran who turns to crime out of frustration and a sense of entitlement. His illicit activities ironically pave his way to public office.

· "The Four Fists" presents the journey of Samuel Meredith, whose confrontations and resulting life lessons shape him into a well-respected man.
