Black and white photographs and illustrations throughout. Book is 2.45kg. Medium cracking to front hinges, with exposed netting, pages slightly loose. Pages and illustrations have light tanning and foxing throughout. Creasing to some pages. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Staining overall.

Copiously illustrated, in black-and-white, "mainly from photographs and authentic sketches taken in South Africa." Large folding map with Contents pages. With laid-in prior owner list describing repairs needed to various pages. Folding map and small closed tears at base of four other pages were subsequently neatly and carefully repaired with clear tape; tape is now discolored but intact. Moderate rubbing to cover extremities, with most wear to spine tips. Spine moderately sunned. Two tiny water spots to lower front board alongside gutter. Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall

Volume I (1900) textured leather; raised bands on spine; gilt spine lettering & band decoration; folding map in rear; Good + Volume II (1901) three-quarter leather over brown cloth; gilt title, flag, and decoration to front board; gilt spine lettering; folding map in front. Exterior Fair, Interior Good + Both copiously illustrated, in black-and-white, "mainly from photographs and authentic sketches taken in South Africa." Moderate wear to extremities of Volume I. Volume II missing upper 4" of spine amd with two additional horizontal tears below title; corners heavily rubbed and with some loss of leather. Front endpaper of both volumes moderately browned (?cause). Upper front corner front endpaper of Volume I is clipped. Interior text and maps of both are clean and intact with only faint wear.

In good bright red bevel-edged boards, with black titles and gilt and black decorated lady to front with rose, thistle, clover symbols. The boards have cracked hinge and front cover a little loose, quite straight; some grubby marks; a few small dents to tail edge; corners and spine ends bumped. Small tan and white pattern on end papers is unmarked except for red stain along tail edge of rear board. Brief dedication on front free end paper. Tanned cut edges. The text block is tightly bound, straight and not tanned or foxed - very good condition, especially for age. With many illustrations, "mainly from photographs and authentic sketches taken in South Africa" fromthe war. Large coloured fold-out map to front. Overall condition good, due to condition of covers. Noticeable creasing to gutter. Cracking to hinges and gutters, leaving netting exposed. Front and rear boards are loose but still attached. Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Notable tanning to spine and edges. Some splits to spine and edges. Water staining to boards. Binding is noticeably shaky, but pages remain intact.
