About This Item

London: J.M. Dent, 1921-1922. All five volumes are from J.M. Dent’s Popular Edition of John Galsworthy titles and were Galsworthy’s personal copies which were used as setting copies for the printer. The books included are (1) Tatterdemalion, which John Galsworthy intended to separate the short stories and scatter them in different volumes of the limited signed edition by writing a full page: “Note for printers: The stories in this volume are revised for the various volumes to which that are attached for the Limited Collected Edition. See index pages sent. Notes will be attached to the volumes dealing with the original dedications. J. G.” with significant deletions, annotations and corrections in ink by Galsworthy throughout the book; (2) Five Tales - with a significant number of ink corrections and deletions in his hand. At the end of the final tale, “Indian Summer of a Forsythe’ Galsworthy has changed the title and he has written to the printer: “The last in the volume ‘Five Tales’ will be “A Feud’...in place of Indian Summer of a Forsythe” Transferred to The Forsythe Saga Vol: II...” (3) The Man of Property - Popular Edition 1921 with John Galsworthy’s bookplate illustrated and designed by R.H. Sauter. (4) The Patrician - with John Galsworthy’s bookplate. (5) To Let - with John Galsworthy’s bookplate. All the books are in very good condition and enclosed in a custom clamshell box. Excellent material worthy of scholarly study.
