About This Item
First edition.
354 p. Bright orange cloth hardcover with black lettering to spine and textured yellow endpapers, has negligible edgewear, a few minor markings, a few faint spots to top foredge, and is very slightly shaken, but is internally Fine. The dust jacket, however, has some wear, including small closed tears, wrinkling, price sticker residue and abrasions, but has been housed in a protective removable plastic sleeve to prevent further wear. Please see listing images.
From the dust jacket:
Abe Ross is a man in search of meaning. He is middle-aged, rebellious, and adrift. The rigid religiosity of his youth has hardened him equally against both friend and faith. He has just returned from the wilds of Northern Canada to discover, if he can, a personal answer to man's eternal question.
Still unsuccessful in his search, Ross leaves civilization, accepting a new life with an isolated band of Ojibwa Indians in upper Ontario. Here he is caught up in a maelstrom of magic and superstition; in sharp contrast, he is confronted by dedicated faith in Christ. And here, through the experience of a new and moving love, he begins at last to arrive at understanding.
FIRST AND VITAL CANDLE offers a vivid and perceptive portrait of a man in transition. It is a worthy successor to PEACE SHALL DESTROY MANY, Wiebe's first highly acclaimed novel.
"This novel stands very close to the top among evangelical novels of this century. At times it leaves the reader breathless. Its characters and incidents are substantial, and the novel as a whole shows a balanced view of both the secular and Christian aspects of life." - CLYDE S. KILBY author of The Christian World of C. S. Lewis
