At London printed in Aldergate Street at the signe of the Starre: John Harrison, George Bishop, Rafe Newberie, Henrie Denham and Thomas Woodcocke, 1587 A good copy of the 2nd edition of Holinshed's Chronicles. This edition lacks the extensive woodcuts found in the 1st edition but has beautiful initial capitals and head and tailpieces. Volumes I and II are bound together; Volume III is a single volume. All have been rebound in half calf with gilt lining and title label to spine and marbled boards. Bookplates from the Skipworth family of Newbold-Revel in Warwickshire dating from 1704 through to 1884, have been relaid on the front endpapers of both volumes. Vol I/II has worming. The animals in question have gone vertically through the text block and so little text has been lost, apart from a solitary sideways saunter in the Irish section from p 41 through to p 1 of the Irish History where there loss of some words. Vols I/II are complete apart from lacking the title page to the Description of Ireland and pp 421-4 in the Scottish section - this text is supplied separately in facsimile. Vol III has professional paper repair to the bottom corner of a number of leaves not affecting text. Parts of this volume have strange pagination following the work of censorship in February 1587, when the Archbishop of Canterbury was required by the Privy Council (acting on the Queen's displeasure with some of the contents) to recall the work and reform it - excising some pages. All copies of Vol III are affected but to different degrees with some having Cancel pages or later reprints (from 1723) added. 74 pp were affected in all. In this volume there are several cases where the recto and verso of the same leaf have different pagination and the ties do not work. There is obvious missing text from p 1327-1332 which is supplied separately in text form. There is staining to some leaves in both volumes and the odd corner tip is missing, but overall the text to both is clean and readable. Contents - Vol I/II: title and prelims [viii]; text 250 pp; Historie of England; [iv]; 202 pp; blank - lacks title to Description of Ireland [iv]; pp 9-61, blank verso; title Irish Historie, [xii]; 183 pp with blank verso; title - Description of Scotland [2]; text pp 3-23 blank verso; title Historie of Scotland [2]; text 29-464 lacking 421-4 and with pagination fault at p 430 (430 should go to text on p 436 to 438 to 431 to 432 to 433 and then continue 439 on); table alphabeticall First to Fourth 53 pp; Colophon January 1597 1p. Vol III: title and prelims [viii]; text 1-1267; continuation [2]; text 1270-1592 finis; [blank]; third table 57pp; Colophon Jan 1587 to verso of final leaf. There is considerable mispagination - please enquire if you would like to see the full listing - in some cases ties work, in others they do not. There is a stub between pp 1554 and 1555 but the tie works. The paper to the title page is much less toned than the rest but it is not new - so perhaps taken from another volume? There are old paper repairs and some ink notes - particularly one before the section with obvious missing text (pp between 1327 and 1332 - which reads 'the next leafe not right'. The Colophon has a lot of old ink doodling on it. Please enquire if you would like to see further images or the detailed pagination listing for Vol III.

Description:
LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to Charles II, Preface to the Reader, alphabetical table of subscribers ('benefactors'), 12 leaves of coats of arms of the benefactors, portrait of Charles II pasted at the beginning of a general… Read More

London: Bennet Griffin at the Griffin in the Great Old Baily, and to be sold by Christ. Wilkinson at the Black Boy, and by Sam Keble at the Turks-Head in Fleetstreet, 1684 A very good copy in recent half leather binding with marbled boards. With double page county map and numerous illustrations. The binding has gilt titles and gilt bands and the endpapers are new. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to 'The Nobility and Gentry', Preface to the Reader; double page map and text with full and in text illustrations (140pp). No index or errata. The binding is in fine condition. The contents have occasional marking (the odd mark, page browning - particularly to edges); and occasional loss to corners without text loss (title page - edge of top corner, p123 - same, p123 and 125 - sm loss at edge). One page has a small repaired tear to the top margin. The map is complete and in good condition, being relaid on paper to support the edges, which were fragile. Description:
London: Alexander Hogg, 1790 A good copy in recent quarter leather binding, with frontispiece, folding map of England and Wales, maps of Scotland and Ireland, and 103 further full page plates. Like many attempts to cover 'earliest history' to 'the present day', this is somewhat sketchy on the early sections, but increasingly detailed almost to a diary approach on 'the present day'. This is a later edition - undated - but the last entry is for June 10th 1790. The author simply added pages to update so although the text pagination runs to p714, the index section starts at p709 reflecting the smaller initial version. Known particularly for its lavish engravings - especially the later ones covering the American War of Independence. This copy has been recently rebound: the binding has a leather spine and title label and marbled boards and is in very good condition. New endpapers. Contents with frontispiece, title page, dedication, table, preface with decorative tailpiece, folding… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed for the Author: Sold by George Stewart, at the Book and Angel, 1716 A very good copy of a scarce detailed account of the Scottish Peerage in the early eighteenth century. George Crawfurd was a Scottish genealogist and historian and this was his second work. This copy is in a newer, probably 20th century binding, copying contemporary binding style. With raised bands and title label to spine and a decorative border to the boards. It is in near fine condition with very slight wear to the top of the spine. Contents: new endpapers and new initial blank; title page in red and black; Preface pp iii-vii; list of subscribers pp i-iv; text pp 1-502; index pp i-iii; final blank. The pagination is somewhat odd: pages 46 and 462 both have additional starred pages - 46* and 46**; 462* and 462**; there is no 49/50 but the text is continuous; there are 2 x pp 53 and 181; and the numbering runs 286, 283, 385, 286, 291 - with continuous text. London: John Harrison, George Bishop, Rafe Newberie, Henrie Denham, and Thomas Woodcocke, 1587. Second Edition. 18th-century calf rebacked. Very Good. THE SECOND EDITION (1587) OF HOLINSHED'S "CHRONICLES": THE BOOK AND THE EDITION USED BY SHAKESPEARE AS A SOURCE FOR A DOZEN OF HIS PLAYS. "In 1548, the prominent London printer and bookseller Reyner (or Reginald) Wolfe ambitiously decided to produce a universal history and cosmography... of the world. After Wolfe's death in 1573, his assistant Raphael Holinshed took over the project, hired more writers and restrained its scope to the British Isles. The Chronicles was first published in 1577 in a two-volume folio edition, illustrated with numerous woodcuts. After Holinshed's death in 1580, Abraham Fleming published the significantly expanded revised second edition of 1587 in a larger folio format, this time without illustrations" (British Library). By scholarly consensus, it is the second (1587) edition, offered here, that Shakespeare used as the… Read More
