About This Item

William Heinemann, Melbourne . London . Toronto, 1944. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition (ex-library)/No Dust Jacket. A foreword by Frieda Lawrence. Pale green coloured cloth covered boards with hand written black coloured titles to the backstrip. The complete first draft of the author's most famous work, and favourite of his wife. This work differs from the third and most commonly read draft, inasmuch as the novel is not organised into parts or chapters and is one long narrative. This is the first Australian edition of this book, and on the page following the free front end page there is a small notation stating "This edition differs slightly from the original American version, published by Dial Press, Inc., in that a few minor expurgations have been made in order to conform with local requirements." This book is an ex-library book – from the Victoria Police Library – and has rubber stamps to the front end pages to that effect. On the title page is a library number, 3442, has been placed in a blue coloured ink. The library actually rebound the book in the pale green coloured cloth that it is in today. Softening of the lower backstrip edge, rubbing of the book corners. There is a slight cock the plot of boards has become quite grubby. Sunning of the backstrip with light age toning of the textblock edges and pages. There is a printing fault on page 239 / 240, where the top right-hand corner had been creased (dogeared) and when it went through the went through the trimming machine it didn't get these 2 pages, consequently the page is not square with the textblock.
