Includes his "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "Big Two-Hearted River" (both I & II); and many more. Includes a brief preface by the author. Includes illustrations by Bernard Fuchs and a painted portrait of Hemingway by Peter Caras near front of volume. Issued as an entry in the publisher's Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers series. One of an unspecified number in this limited edition. Publisher's "Notes from the Editors" booklet is included. --- Bound in rich full burgundy bonded leather covers with two raised bands on spine. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges all in bright gilt. Interior leaves printed on high-quality papers. Burgundy silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker. Volume lacks a dust jacket (as issued). --- A Near Fine copy with a spot of lighter toning than surrounding leather color at head spine and slight scratching to textblock fore-edge gilding, else bright, newish and tightly-bound. Synopsis

The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories is an anthology of writings by Ernest Hemingway published in 1938. It contains Hemingway's only full-length play, The Fifth Column, and 49 short stories. Many of the stories of the collection exist in other collections, including In Our Time, Men Without Women, Winner Take Nothing, and The Snows of Kilimanjaro.
