About This Item

Cambridge, MA: Stone & Kimball, 1893. First, Limited edition. Hardcover. Fine. 8vo, xxiv, 223pp., lightly sunned lavender cloth with paper spine label, untrimmed.

No. 42 of only 50 Large Paper Copies, of the total edition of only 450 copies. This copy ex libris Elwyn B. Gould with his name. Gould's architectural bookplate appears on the front pastedown. His name is also cited by Eugene Field in Field's Preface, as a collector of art books (p. xv). This copy also was owned by Frank J. Piehl, eminent collector of Eugene Fieldiana. Piehl also owned Copy No. 1 of this Limited Edition, and at least one of the three Special Copies only for Stone, Kimball, & Field. Laid in is Piehl's handwritten note giving the holograph changes which Field made in Copy No. 1, which Field had presented to Francis Wilson. Not only was the the first hardcover book published by Stone & Kimball [Kramer 2a], it was the first published bibliography of first editions of only American authors - thus a milestone in American first editions collecting.

About Thomas J. Joyce And Company

Joyce And Company has been in business as a professional rare bookseller and appraiser since 1975. Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
