About This Item

New York, Evanston: Harper & Row, 1968. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. The First Circle of Dante's Hell stands as a metaphor for this highly autobiographical novel about the inmates of a prison for scientists in Stalin's Russia. This appears to be a Book Club edition with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page. The pages are a bit browned, there is a light smudge on the lower textblock edge, and the upper textblock edge is very, very lightly foxed. Otherwise this is a clean copy with no writing, marks, or underlining. There is a bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper. No remainder marks. Not an ex-library copy. Spine is tight and crisp. Corners are square but bumped, and the lower corner on the rear board is curved inward. There is also some bumping at the spine extremes. Maroon boards are flat and true with just a few light scuffs to the front board and spine. Gold gilt lettering is still vibrant. The dust jacket is not clipped but has no price. The jacket does have some wear including some tattering to the lower spine, a 1/4" tear along the upper edge of the front cover, a 1/2" tear on the same, some foxing on the back cover mainly to the left and upper edges (a strip about 1" wide along each), and some microtears thrown in for good measure. That being said the jacket is still vibrant and looks pretty good with only a hint of sunning to the spine. A great price for this classic novel! This collectible, very good+/very good, book club copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!
