The binding is slightly bumped with light foxing to the top edge of the rear wrap's inner fold. [xx] & 232 pages. Near fine. <p>Proof copy from the library of Peter Matthiessen [as is common with proofs, the illustrations are not present].<p>The autobiography of Palden Gyatso, as told to Tsering Shakya, a leading Tibetan historian, who translated the text from the Tibetan. In 1959, Gyatso was imprisoned by the Chinese for thirty-three years after taking part in a non-violent demonstration for Tibetan freedom. The foreword is by the Dalai Lama.<p>Laid in is a letter to Matthiessen from the Harvill Press, sending him the book and noting that Tsering Shakya, a great admirer of Mathiessen, very much wanted him to receive a copy.
