About This Item

NY: Jewish Publication Society of America, 1941. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. 394pp. First edition (no subsequent printings noted; 1941 date on both copyright and title pages). Full brown cloth with matching brown topstain, and black spine titles & front panel motif. NF/VG. Light bumping at spine ends, very faint spotting to fore-edge of textblock and endpapers, else near fine. In an unpriced jacket shallowly chipped at all four corners, with several short closed tears and associated creases at base of front and rear panels and at the ends of the lightly rubbed spine panel. Young adult novel following a Jewish boy, Adam Levy, as he matures from a street fighter in an anti-Semitic neighborhood of Philadelphia circa 1910 to a high school football star and ultimately a WWI war hero in France. Uncommon first edition, especially in such a well-preserved example of the photo-montage jacket.
